The German ambasador to Serbia Mr. Axel Dittmann visited the refugee center in Kanjiza, as well as the old brick factory in Subotica – informal refugee center, together with the representatvies of Caritas Serbia and Diocesan Caritas Subotica, who are providing support to refugees there.
The German Ministry of Foreign Affairs is supporting Caritas project of helping the refugees in Serbia with an amount of 200.000 euros, for the period from 1st September to 31 December 2015. This support will be used to provide assistance to refugees in the South of Serbia – in Presevo and in the North – in Subotica and Kanjiza. The assistance provided by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs through Caritas consists in the distribution of food kits, hygiene kits for women and children, sleeping bags, raincoats and providing psycho-social support.
The visit of the ambassador Dittmann on the 15th of September was especially important to support the aid work given to refugees, because on this day Hungary officially closed the borders for refugees coming from Serbia. He also participated in distributing the aid to the refugees. In his statement to the journalists Mr. Dittmann pointed out that Serbia is approaching with great responsibility the challenges of the refugee crisis and that Germany will continue to support Serbia.
Considering the fact that a great number of refugees gathered around the border crossings Horgos 1 and 2, hoping that Hungary will reopen the borders, the representatives of Caritas Subotica were also there to provide assistance, mostly in food and hygiene articles.
