Caritas Counselling Centre

In order to be placed on the white Schengen list, Serbian government has signed readmission agreements with many EU countries, although the country has not recovered enough to be able to provide all necessary assistance for a sustainable reintegration of the returnees. When in 2014 Serbia was declared a safe country of origin, many Serbian citizens, who have lived in a EU country under the tolerance status, had to return. Within the project Integration of Returnees into the Serbian Society a counselling centre has been established in 2017 in Belgrade with the support of Caritas Germany. The centre provides counselling, orientation and non-material support to returnees, regardless of whether they were asylum seekers, tolerated refugees or persons without valid residence permits in their host countries prior to their return. In addition, the centre makes referrals to other local or international organizations which provide in kind aid and employment and vocational training opportunities for returnees. The Caritas Counselling Centre works also directly and closely with various return counselling centres, authorities and institutions in the host countries – both, pre- and post-departure – to facilitate and accelerate the reintegration process of returnees.
